Washington Releases Paid Sick Leave Proposed Rules

State Paid Sick Leave Begins January 1, 2018

Washington has released a set of proposed rules concerning the state paid sick leave requirements of Initiative 1433, which go into effect on January 1, 2018.

Highlights of the Proposed Rules
The proposed paid sick leave rules create definitions and address (among other things) written policies, accrual, usage, variance from required increments of usage, reasonable notice, verification for absences exceeding 3 days, payment of paid sick leave, separation and reinstatement of accrued paid sick leave upon rehire, paid time off (PTO) programs, shared leave, shift swapping, frontloading, third-party administrators, employee use of paid sick leave for unauthorized purposes, and employer notification and reporting to employees.

The proposed rules also present amendments to update language concerning people with disabilities.
