Washington State Law Washington recognizes same-sex relationships under state law as follows: Same-Sex Marriage Same-sex marriage is legal in Washington. Individuals who have entered into a legal union (other than a marriage) that was validly formed in another state; provides substantially the same rights, benefits, and responsibilities as a marriage; and does not meet the state's definition of domestic partnership, will be treated as having the same rights and responsibilities as married spouses in the state, unless such relationship is prohibited by law or the individuals become permanent residents of Washington and do not enter into a marriage within one year after becoming permanent residents. Click here for more information. Domestic Partnerships Registered domestic partners are treated the same as married spouses for all purposes under Washington state law. Effective June 30, 2014, registered domestic partnerships will be automatically converted to marriages unless: The couple has already legally married; At least one partner is 62 years of age or older as of June 30, 2014; or The couple has legally dissolved their domestic partnership or has started a legal proceeding to dissolve their domestic partnership by June 30, 2014. A legal union (other than a marriage) of two persons that was validly formed in another jurisdiction, and that is substantially equivalent to a domestic partnership under Washington law, will be recognized and treated as a valid domestic partnership in the state.
