Checklist of Illegal or Inappropriate Interview Questions

It is unlawful under federal law not to hire candidates because of their race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or military service. Some states also prohibit discrimination based upon marital status and other factors. To stay compliant with these laws, ask only job-related questions in employment interviews, and avoid questions and conversation that could lead to discussion of these protected categories. What seems to you to be innocent small talk could be interpreted by a rejected job applicant as discrimination.
