Multiple Employer Health Plans

In regulating employee health plans, federal law recognizes employee welfare benefit plans, multiple employer welfare arrangements (MEWA), and other health plans that may be subject to fiduciary duties imposed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Note: Multiple employer welfare arrangements, also referred to "multiple employer trusts" (METs), should not be confused with “multi-employer health plans,” which are plans established or maintained as a result of one or more collective bargaining agreements.
